Completed Master projects with HypOnFjordFish in 2022

Written by Martine Røysted Solås // 25 March 2023

In 2022, three master students completed their Master projects with HypOnFjordFish: Carl Bukowski, Karen Rosland and Øivind Andersen. All three worked hard with their respective research questions and provided exciting results!

Carl studied the effects of hypoxia on mesopelagic crustaceans (shrimp and krill). He compared their abundance, size and trophic ecology (who eats what) in fjords with different oxygen conditions.

Karen (in the middle) studied the distribution, diet and hypoxia tolerance of two small shark species in our fjords.

Øivind studied the effect a parasasitic copepod on the mesopelagic fish Glacier lanternfish (Benthosema glaciale) in some of our fjords including Masfjorden and Fensfjorden.

Attending the 3rd GO2NE Oxygen Conference

A few weeks ago, several of the HypOnFjordFish group members travelled to Liège in Belgium for the 53rd International Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics (3rd GO2NE Oxygen Conference) from the 16th to the 20th of May. This was the perfect arena for us to share some our work and for us to connect and discuss with other scientists working on ocean deoxygenation.

Exploratory cruise for mesopelagic fish eggs was a great success

Last week, Frank Midtøy and Heikki Savolainen went to Korsfjorden on the research vessel Emiliana to begin the preliminary process of testing gear to collect mesopelagic fish eggs. No one has ever been able to conduct lab experiments with healthy mesopelagic species, so establishing a lab population would be a major breakthrough in allowing us to study them.
