While initially delayed for a few years due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, the PRIMA Learning workshop on using stable isotopes to study trophic interactions in the marine environment was successfully held in Cape Town, South Africa from 20-23 February, 2023.
In January 2023, two HypOnFjordFish members attended a workshop themed around “Teaching ocean science and SDGs in higher education.” Research topics under HypOnFjordFish actually exemplify some of the connections between two of the sustainable development goals.
In 2022, three master students completed their Master projects with HypOnFjordFish: Carl Bukowski, Karen Rosland and Øivind Andersen. All three worked hard with their respective research questions and provided exciting results!
September every autumn is a great happening at the Department of Biological Sciences: New master students enroll for student active research in their first semester. This happening is actually the origin of our HypOnFjordFish project.
In July 2022, three of the HypOnFjordFish group members traveled to Nottingham in England to attend the FSBI (Fisheries Society of the British Isles) Symposium 2022 to present HypOnFjordFish research and discuss and learn from other fish biologists.
On the 1st of June 2022 we followed the UN Ocean Decade lab webinar: “The science we need for the fjords we want: Challenges and opportunities for sustainable management of productive fjord ecosystems”.

A few weeks ago, several of the HypOnFjordFish group members travelled to Liège in Belgium for the 53rd International Colloquium on Ocean Dynamics (3rd GO2NE Oxygen Conference) from the 16th to the 20th of May. This was the perfect arena for us to share some our work and for us to connect and discuss with other scientists working on ocean deoxygenation.
Last week, Frank Midtøy and Heikki Savolainen went to Korsfjorden on the research vessel Emiliana to begin the preliminary process of testing gear to collect mesopelagic fish eggs. No one has ever been able to conduct lab experiments with healthy mesopelagic species, so establishing a lab population would be a major breakthrough in allowing us to study them.
